UN Day

Oct 24, 2014

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

International Day of Peace

Sep 21, 2014

International Day of Peace

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the General Assembly Declaration on the Right of Peoples to PeacePDF document, the theme of this year’s International Day of Peace is the “Right of Peoples to Peace”. This anniversary offers a unique opportunity to reaffirm the United Nations commitment to the purposes and principles upon which the Organization was founded. The Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace recognizes that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67PDF document of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.

In 2001, the General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282PDF document, which established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.

The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.

Syrian Displacement: Views from the Region

Sep 16, 2014

Syrian Displacement: Views from the Region

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM EDT
Brookings Institution
Saul/Zilkha Rooms
1775 Massachusetts Avenue NW

Details and to RSVP: http://bit.ly/1qNwL0m

There are now more than three million Syrian refugees seeking protection and survival in the region. The initial generosity of host governments is increasingly challenged as the presence of the refugees puts strains on public services, infrastructure, housing stocks and political cohesion. Solutions to the bloody conflict appear more distant than ever and it is likely that the refugees will not be able to return to their homes in the near future. In Syria itself, over six million people have been displaced within their country’s borders and the United Nations estimates that over nine million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

On September 16, the Brookings-LSE Project on Internal Displacement and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will present a first-hand view of Syria’s displacement crisis. Speakers will include Carol Batchelor of UNHCR Turkey, Brian Hansford of UNHCR and Andrew Tabler of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Elizabeth Ferris, senior fellow and co-director of the Brookings-LSE Project on Internal Displacement will moderate the event and offer opening remarks.

World Humanitarian Day

Aug 19, 2014

World Humanitarian Day

19 August 2014

On World Humanitarian Day, we renew our commitment to life-saving relief efforts -- and we remember all those who died serving this noble cause.

Last year, more humanitarian workers were kidnapped, seriously injured or killed than ever before. This is an outrage.

In recent weeks, dozens of humanitarians -- including members of the UN family -- have lost their lives in South Sudan and Gaza. Too many people have died or suffered from deliberate attacks.

Humanitarian workers and their families are hit hardest by these crimes.

But they are also felt by millions of others.

Attacks on humanitarian workers hinder the ability of people in desperate need to receive lifesaving assistance.

Children go unvaccinated. Sick and wounded patients go untreated. Those forced from their homes are left without food, water or shelter – exposed to violence, disease or other threats.

On World Humanitarian Day, we honour the heroic aid workers who rush bravely to help people in need.

We remember their sacrifices, and we recognize the millions of people who count on humanitarian workers for their very survival.

Let us honour the fallen by protecting those who carry on their work – and supporting humanitarian relief operations worldwide.

-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

International Youth Day

Aug 12, 2014

International Youth Day

The theme of International Youth Day 2014 is “Youth and Mental Health” under the slogan ‘Mental Health Matters’.

Youth with mental health conditions can often experience stigma and discrimination, which in turn can lead to exclusion and/or discourage people from seeking help for fear of being negatively ‘labelled’. Efforts are needed to overcome this stigma to ensure that young people with mental health conditions can lead full and healthy lives free of isolation and unnecessary shame, and that they openly seek the services and support they need. You can be part of these efforts!

UN DESA, through the Focal Point on Youth, and the Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development, promotes a multi-dimensional approach to addressing the challenges faced by young people with mental health issues, including tackling stigma and promoting social inclusion to enable all young people to achieve their aspirations and goals.

The UN in Haiti: Time for a Change?

With remarks by
Sandra Honoré
Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Haiti
Robert Perito
Executive Director, The Perito Group
Former Haiti Program Director, U.S. Institute of Peace

Moderated by
Michel Gabaudan
President
Refugees International
The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti has been remade numerous times during its twenty-year history – most recently following the devastating Haitian earthquake of 2010. Now the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) may face another major reconfiguration, including a draw-down of military forces. Yet even as MINUSTAH's plans move forward, Haiti's future remains uncertain. Disputes and delays over this year's legislative elections risk paralyzing the Haitian parliament, and the nation's police are still in need of reform. At the same time, the humanitarian and development needs of Haitians – including those affected by the recent cholera epidemic – loom large. Join us as we discuss how a changing MINUSTAH can meet these challenges.

This event will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule.

Monday, August 4, 2014
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
LOCATION:
